Shinano Province
Shinano Province was an old province of central Japan, now Nagano Prefecture, a mountainous land of river basins among the Japanese Alps. In the Sengoku period Takeda Shingen conquered most of it, fighting Uesugi Kenshin at Kawanakajima in the north. Under the Tokugawa it was divided among several domains, among them Matsumoto, Ueda and Matsushiro, and was crossed by the Nakasendō highway.
