Sea of Japan
The Sea of Japan is the marginal sea of the western Pacific between the Japanese archipelago, Sakhalin, the Korean Peninsula and the Russian Far East. Its coasts formed the eastern edge of empires based in Manchuria, such as Balhae and the Liao, and its name is disputed by Korea, which calls it the East Sea.
