Chūgoku region
The Chūgoku region is the western end of Honshu, the main island of Japan, made up of the prefectures of Hiroshima, Okayama, Shimane, Tottori and Yamaguchi. Its mountains divide a Sea of Japan coast from the Inland Sea coast. In the 16th century the Mōri clan conquered most of the region, and in the Edo period it was divided among domains such as Chōshū, Hiroshima, Okayama and Tottori.
