Chufut-Kale
Chufut-Kale is a ruined cliff-top fortress town in the mountains of Crimea, a few kilometres east of Bakhchysarai. Known in the Middle Ages as Qırq Yer, it was the first seat of the Crimean khans before Bakhchysarai was built below it. Its later name, meaning 'Jewish fortress', came from the Karaite Jews who formed most of its population until the nineteenth century.
