Sakhalin
Sakhalin is a large island in the Russian Far East, north of Hokkaido. Its original inhabitants included Ainu, Nivkh and Orok peoples. Russia and Japan shared it from 1855 until 1875, when Russia took the whole island. The Treaty of Portsmouth of 1905 gave Japan the south as Karafuto, which the Soviet Union occupied in 1945, and the island is now Russia's Sakhalin Oblast.
