Sakhalin Oblast

Sakhalin Oblast is a federal subject of Russia covering the island of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands, with its capital at Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. It was formed in 1947 after the Soviet Union took southern Sakhalin, Japanese Karafuto, and the Kurils at the end of the Second World War. Japan still disputes the southernmost Kurils, and the region has large oil and gas fields.
