Latgale
Latgale is the easternmost historical region of Latvia, centred on Daugavpils and Rēzekne. Unlike the rest of Livonia, it remained under Polish–Lithuanian rule after the Truce of Altmark of 1629 and passed to Russia in 1772, so it stayed largely Catholic. Many of its people speak Latgalian, a written variety of Latvian, and the region joined independent Latvia in 1918–1920.
