Daugavpils is the second largest city of Latvia, on the Daugava river in the south-eastern region of Latgale. Founded by the Livonian Order as Dünaburg in the 13th century, it later belonged to Poland-Lithuania and the Russian Empire, as Dvinsk. Latvian and Polish forces took it from the Red Army in January 1920, and it has a large Russian-speaking population.
