Baltic Landeswehr

1918–1919 · 20th century · Also known as Baltische Landeswehr

The Baltic Landeswehr was a volunteer force formed in Latvia in late 1918, mainly from Baltic German nobles and townspeople, with Latvian and Russian units. Fighting alongside German Freikorps against the Bolsheviks, it recaptured Riga in May 1919. It was defeated by Estonian and Latvian forces at Cēsis in June 1919 and was then reorganised under British supervision as part of the Latvian army.
