Western Dvina

Also known as Daugava

The Western Dvina, called the Daugava in Latvia, rises in the Valdai Hills of Russia and flows through Belarus and Latvia to the Gulf of Riga. In the early Middle Ages it was a trade route linking the Baltic with Rus', settled by the Krivichs. Polotsk and Vitebsk grew on its banks, and Riga at its mouth.
