Principality of Vitebsk
Origins
Vitebsk, on the Western Dvina, belonged to the Principality of Polotsk. After the death of Vseslav of Polotsk in 1101, his sons divided his lands, and Vitebsk became the seat of its own line of princes, though the details of its early rulers are poorly recorded.
Rule and society
The town lived from trade along the Dvina between Riga and the Rus' interior, and its merchants were included in the trade treaty that Smolensk made with Riga and Gotland in 1229. Rule passed among descendants of the Polotsk dynasty and sometimes to princes from Smolensk, while the influence of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania grew through the 13th century.
Decline and legacy
Algirdas, son of Gediminas, married Maria, daughter of the last prince Yaroslav, and inherited Vitebsk in 1320. The principality became part of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and an important base for Algirdas.
Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
