c. 1039–1101 · 11th century

Vseslav of Polotsk was prince of Polotsk from 1044 to 1101 and a rival of the sons of Yaroslav the Wise. Defeated on the Nemiga river near Minsk in 1067, he was seized during negotiations and imprisoned in Kiev, but the Kievans freed him in 1068 and briefly made him their prince. He built St Sophia in Polotsk, and after his death his sons divided his lands into Polotsk, Minsk, Vitebsk and other principalities.
