Yaroslav the Wise

c. 978–1054 · 11th century

Yaroslav the Wise was Grand Prince of Kiev from 1019 to 1054, after a long war of succession among the sons of Vladimir the Great. He defeated the Pechenegs outside Kiev in 1036, built the Cathedral of Saint Sophia, founded the town of Yaroslavl and is credited with the first written law code of the Rus, the Russkaya Pravda. The marriages of his children linked Kievan Rus to the royal houses of Europe, and his division of the realm among his sons shaped its later principalities.
