Vladimir Monomakh was Prince of Pereyaslavl and Chernigov and, from 1113, Grand Prince of Kiev. A grandson of Yaroslav the Wise and, through his mother, of the Byzantine emperor Constantine IX Monomachos, he led repeated campaigns against the Cumans and took part in the princely congress of Lyubech in 1097. His Instruction to his children is a classic of early Rus literature, and his sons ruled much of Rus after him.
