Boris and Gleb

d. 1015 · 11th century · Also known as Saints Boris and Gleb

Boris and Gleb were sons of Vladimir the Great of Kiev who were murdered in 1015 during the succession struggle after their father's death, a crime the chronicles blame on their brother Sviatopolk. Their acceptance of death without resistance led to their veneration as passion-bearers, and they became the first saints canonised in Rus'. Gleb had held Murom.
