Rurik

d. 879 · 9th century · Also known as Riurik

Rurik was a Varangian chieftain who, according to the Primary Chronicle, was invited in 862 by Slavic and Finnic tribes of the north to rule them, settling at Ladoga and then Novgorod. He was regarded as the founder of the Rurikid dynasty, which ruled Kievan Rus' and later Muscovy until 1598. His historical existence is debated, since he appears only in chronicles written two centuries later.
