Volkhov River
The Volkhov is a river in north-western Russia that flows about 224 kilometres north from Lake Ilmen to Lake Ladoga. Novgorod stands on its banks just below the lake, and Staraya Ladoga lies near its mouth. In the Viking Age it formed the first stage of the river routes linking the Baltic with the Dnieper and the Volga, along which traders and the early Rus' moved south.
