Lake Ladoga

Lake Ladoga, north-east of Saint Petersburg in Russia, is the largest lake in Europe. Its basin linked the Baltic to the river routes of Rus' through the Neva and Volkhov, and Staraya Ladoga on its southern shore was an early Viking-age trading town. During the siege of Leningrad in 1941–1944 the 'Road of Life' across its ice carried supplies into the city.
