Vyborg

Also known as Viipuri, Viborg

Vyborg, in Finnish Viipuri, is a port city at the head of the Gulf of Finland on the Karelian Isthmus, now in Russia. It grew around a castle founded by the Swedes in 1293, passed to Russia in 1710 and became part of the Grand Duchy of Finland in 1812. As one of Finland's largest cities it was ceded to the Soviet Union in 1940, retaken in 1941 and finally lost in 1944, when its Finnish population was evacuated.
