Battle of Brunkeberg

1471 · 15th century

The Battle of Brunkeberg was fought on 10 October 1471 on a ridge outside Stockholm, where the Swedish regent Sten Sture the Elder, with peasants, miners and burghers, defeated King Christian I of Denmark, who sought to enforce his rule over Sweden under the Kalmar Union. The victory secured Sture's regency and became a lasting symbol of Swedish independence from Danish rule.
