Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson

c. 1390–1436 · 15th century

Engelbrekt Engelbrektsson was a Swedish mine owner from the Bergslagen mining district who led a rebellion in 1434 against King Eric of Pomerania and his Danish bailiffs. Supported by miners, peasants and later nobles, the revolt spread across Sweden and he was chosen as captain of the realm. He was murdered in 1436, but became a national hero, and his revolt began a century of conflict within the Kalmar Union.
