Stockholm
Stockholm is the capital and largest city of Sweden, built on islands where Lake Mälaren meets the Baltic Sea. First recorded in 1252 and associated with Birger Jarl, it grew as a trading port with strong German and Hanseatic links and became the seat of royal government. It was the scene of the Stockholm Bloodbath of 1520 and the centre of the Swedish Empire in the 17th century.
