Stjepan Vukčić Kosača

1404–1466 · 15th century

Stjepan Vukčić Kosača was the most powerful noble of the Kingdom of Bosnia in the mid-15th century, inheriting Hum and the coast from his uncle Sandalj Hranić in 1435. Often at odds with the Bosnian kings and Ragusa, in 1448 he took the title Herceg of Saint Sava, from which his lands took the name Herzegovina. The Ottomans conquered most of his territory before his death in 1466.
