Thirty Tyrants

404–403 BCE · 5th century BCE · Also known as the Thirty

The Thirty Tyrants were the oligarchy of thirty men installed in Athens with Spartan backing after its defeat in the Peloponnesian War in 404 BCE. Led by Critias, they executed some 1,500 people and seized property, until democratic exiles under Thrasybulus defeated them at Munychia and the democracy was restored in 403 BCE.
