Vladimir Lenin

1870–1924 · 20th century · Also known as Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov

Vladimir Lenin was a Russian revolutionary who led the Bolshevik party. He organised the October Revolution of 1917, headed the government of Soviet Russia through the Civil War and founded the Soviet Union in 1922. His New Economic Policy of 1921 allowed limited private trade. After strokes from 1922 he died in 1924, and his ideas, as Leninism, shaped later communist states.
