Yaroslavl
Yaroslavl is a city on the Volga in Russia, north-east of Moscow, at the mouth of the Kotorosl. Founded in the early 11th century by Yaroslav the Wise, it was the seat of its own princes from 1218 until Moscow absorbed it in 1463. In the 17th century wealthy merchants built its many richly painted churches, and its historic centre is a World Heritage site.
