Council of Florence

1438–1445 · 15th century · Also known as Council of Ferrara-Florence

The Council of Florence was an ecumenical council of the Catholic Church that met at Ferrara from 1438 and in Florence from 1439, continuing the Council of Basel. Attended by the Byzantine emperor John VIII Palaiologos and the Patriarch of Constantinople, it proclaimed the union of the Latin and Greek churches in July 1439, but the union was rejected by most Orthodox clergy and laity and by the Grand Duchy of Moscow.
