Dante Alighieri

1265–1321 · 14th century · Also known as Dante

Dante Alighieri was a Florentine poet and politician, author of the Divine Comedy. A White Guelph, he was exiled from Florence in 1302 and spent his remaining years at the courts of northern Italy, including Verona and Ravenna, where he died. His Comedy, written in Tuscan, helped establish the Italian literary language and portrays many people of his age.
