1331–1406 · 14th century

Coluccio Salutati (1331–1406) was an Italian humanist and chancellor of the Republic of Florence from 1375 until his death. His public letters defended Florentine liberty against the papacy and the Visconti of Milan, and he invited the Byzantine scholar Manuel Chrysoloras to teach Greek in Florence in 1397. He gathered a circle of younger humanists, including Leonardo Bruni and Poggio Bracciolini.
