Discourses on Livy
The Discourses on Livy are a work of political theory by Niccolò Machiavelli, written around 1517 and published in 1531. Taking the first ten books of Livy's history of Rome as a starting point, Machiavelli analysed how republics are founded, expanded and preserved, praising mixed government, civic virtue and the conflict between nobles and people. It is a founding text of modern republican thought.
