Donatello

c. 1386–1466 · 15th century

Donatello (c. 1386–1466) was a Florentine sculptor of the early Renaissance. Trained in Lorenzo Ghiberti's workshop, he worked in marble, bronze and wood, and his bronze David, the first free-standing male nude since antiquity, and his equestrian monument to Gattamelata in Padua revived classical forms. His naturalism and expressive figures, such as the Penitent Magdalene, influenced generations of artists.
