Niccolò Machiavelli

1469–1527 · 16th century · Also known as Machiavelli

Niccolò Machiavelli was a Florentine diplomat, historian and political theorist. As secretary of the Second Chancery of the Florentine Republic from 1498 to 1512 he served on missions to Cesare Borgia, the French king and the emperor. Dismissed when the Medici returned, he wrote The Prince (1513), the Discourses on Livy and the Florentine Histories, works that founded modern political thought on observed practice rather than ideal norms.
