Manuel Chrysoloras was a Byzantine scholar and diplomat who taught Greek in Florence from 1397, the first sustained teaching of the language in Italy for centuries. His pupils included Leonardo Bruni and Guarino da Verona, and his grammar, the Erotemata, was widely used. His teaching opened classical Greek literature to the Italian humanists.
