Council of Constance

1414–1418 · 15th century

The Council of Constance was a general council of the Catholic Church held in the imperial city of Constance, convened at the urging of King Sigismund. It ended the Western Schism by deposing or accepting the resignations of three rival popes and electing Martin V in 1417. It also condemned the Czech reformer Jan Hus, who was burned in 1415.
