Martin Luther

1483–1546 · 16th century

Martin Luther was a German theologian and monk whose Ninety-five Theses of 1517 began the Protestant Reformation. Born at Eisleben in the County of Mansfeld, he refused to recant before Emperor Charles V at the Diet of Worms in 1521. Protected by Elector Frederick the Wise of Saxony, he translated the Bible into German, and his teachings became Lutheranism.
