Council of Clermont

1095 · 11th century

The Council of Clermont was a church council held by Pope Urban II at Clermont in Auvergne in November 1095. Besides decrees on church reform, it ended with Urban's sermon of 27 November calling on western Christians to aid the Byzantines and free Jerusalem, which launched the First Crusade. The crowd is said to have answered with the cry 'Deus vult' ('God wills it').
