Pope Urban II

1095 · 11th century · Also known as Urban II

Pope Urban II was bishop of Rome from 1088 to 1099. In 1095, responding to an appeal from the Byzantine emperor Alexios I framed around the Seljuk threat, he launched the First Crusade at the Council of Clermont. The Crusades that followed were partly a consequence of the Seljuk Empire's advance into Anatolia after Manzikert.
