Catherine de' Medici
Catherine de' Medici was an Italian noblewoman who became queen of France as the wife of Henry II and dominated French politics as mother of the kings Francis II, Charles IX and Henry III. As regent and adviser from 1560 she sought to balance Catholics and Protestants during the Wars of Religion, but she is closely associated with the St Bartholomew's Day massacre of 1572. Through her mother she inherited the county of Auvergne.
