Person
Catherine Cornaro
Catherine Cornaro was a Venetian noblewoman who became queen of Cyprus by marrying King James II, of the Lusignan dynasty, in 1472. After the deaths of her husband in 1473 and their infant son James III in 1474, she reigned as queen, with Venice controlling her government. In 1489 the Venetian Republic forced her to abdicate and annexed Cyprus; she received the lordship of Asolo, where she kept a court of writers.
