Ferrara
Ferrara is a city of Emilia-Romagna in northern Italy, near the Po. From the 13th century it was ruled by the House of Este, whose court made it a centre of Renaissance art, music and letters, home to the poets Ariosto and Tasso. When the main Este line died out in 1597 the Papal States took the city, and its planned Renaissance extension, the Addizione Erculea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
