Addizione Erculea

1492 · 15th century · Also known as Herculean Addition

The Addizione Erculea was a planned extension of Ferrara begun in 1492 for Duke Ercole I d'Este and designed by the architect Biagio Rossetti. It roughly doubled the city's area with broad straight streets, new walls and palaces such as the Palazzo dei Diamanti, and is often called the first modern city plan in Europe. It is part of Ferrara's UNESCO World Heritage listing.
