Ferrante II Gonzaga

1563–1630 · 17th century · Also known as Ferrante II Gonzaga, Duke of Guastalla

Ferrante II Gonzaga was Count and from 1621 Duke of Guastalla, a grandson of Ferrante I Gonzaga. A poet and diplomat in Habsburg service, he obtained from Emperor Ferdinand II the elevation of Guastalla to a duchy. When the main Gonzaga line of Mantua died out in 1627, he claimed its inheritance, a dispute that fed into the War of the Mantuan Succession.
