Avignon
Avignon is a city on the Rhône in Provence, southern France, the Avennio of the Cavares and of Roman Gaul. The popes resided there from 1309 to 1377, building the vast Palace of the Popes, and Pope Clement VI bought the city in 1348; it remained papal territory until France annexed it in 1791. Its historic centre is a World Heritage Site.
