Arles
Arles is a city on the Rhône in Provence, southern France, near the head of the river's delta. As Roman Arelate it was a leading city of Gaul, with an amphitheatre and theatre that still stand, and an imperial residence in the 4th century. In the Middle Ages its archbishops were powerful, and it gave its name to the Kingdom of Arles, formed from the Burgundian realms in the 10th century.
