Avienus

4th century · 4th century · Also known as Rufius Festus Avienius

Avienus (Rufius Festus Avienius) was a Latin poet of the 4th century CE who adapted Greek works on geography and astronomy into verse. His Ora Maritima, a description of the coasts of which only the part from the Atlantic to Massalia survives, preserves material from a much older Greek sailing guide and gives early information on the peoples of Iberia and southern Gaul.
