Bolognese Republic

1796 CE – 1796 CE · capital Bologna

The brief republic set up in Bologna in 1796 after the French expelled papal rule, which soon merged into the Cispadane Republic.

Origins

In June 1796 French troops entered Bologna, part of the Papal States, and the papal legate left. The city's Senate, under French protection, took over the government, and Bologna declared itself a free republic.

Rule and society

Bologna's old ruling families kept much of their influence, governing through the Senate and new committees while meeting French demands for money and art. The republic drafted a constitution in late 1796. It sent delegates to the congresses that united Bologna with Ferrara, Modena and Reggio.

Decline and legacy

By the end of 1796 Bologna had joined the Cispadane Republic, which in 1797 became part of the Cisalpine Republic.

Few sources survive for this state; details are uncertain.
