Carniola

Carniola is a historical region in present-day central Slovenia, centred on Ljubljana. Settled by Slavs in the early Middle Ages, it became a march and later a duchy of the Holy Roman Empire and passed to the Habsburgs in the 14th century. It remained an Austrian crown land until 1918, and as the heartland of the Slovene language and culture it formed the core of modern Slovenia.
