Carnival of Oruro

The Carnival of Oruro is an annual religious and folk festival in the Bolivian mining city of Oruro, held before Lent in honour of the Virgin of the Mineshaft (Virgen del Socavón). Lasting several days, it combines Andean and Catholic traditions in processions of thousands of dancers, notably the diablada, or devil dance. UNESCO proclaimed it a Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.
