Carnuntum

Carnuntum was a Roman legionary fortress and town on the Danube between Vienna and Bratislava, in present-day Lower Austria. Capital of the province of Pannonia Superior, it lay on the Amber Road and was a base for Marcus Aurelius in the Marcomannic Wars. Septimius Severus was proclaimed emperor there in 193, and an imperial conference met there in 308.
