Aachen
Aachen is a city in western Germany that served as the favoured residence and principal court of Charlemagne. Its palace complex, including the Palatine Chapel, became the symbolic centre of the Carolingian Empire and the focus of its scholarly and administrative activity. Charlemagne was buried there, and later German kings were crowned in the city for centuries.
